…And A Review Of the DeLonghi Multifry Multicooker
Our laptops might be from a decade ago, and our phone barely deserves to be called smart, but when it comes to kitchen gadgets, we are right there at the front of the foodie line, the earliest of adopters. An electric pie maker? Sure. A breakfast muffin machine? Why not? An air fryer that promises me guilt-free fries? Just take my money already.
As loyal airfryer advocates and devoted users since they were first introduced a few years ago, an invitation for the launch of the DeLonghi Multifry had us extremely excited. The Air Fryer of the future, it seemed to be able to do everything. So when our invitation promised a hands-on demo, we really hoped it’d be much more than just fries, cause our old air fryer did that just fine.
A few minutes into the explanation of it’s features, while my partner was busy writing notes and taking pictures, I was figuring out how to convince the family that we needed this little beauty. And the cooking demo just increased my conviction. While it’s hard to believe that perfectly grilled and charred tikkas and kebabs can be made in an air fryer (I was quite skeptical about it), seeing truly was believing and these were the beauties we whipped up.
Wouldn’t this be perfect for a healthy Ramadan? No standing at the stove, no pans full of oil. No emptying out the oven (used for storage thanks to an overflowing kitchen) every time we needed to bake something. My argument was solid. And then Chef Osama Al Sayed, whom we already adored, announced that we would all be taking home the best model of the Multifry as a gift! Eid had come before Ramadan this year for us.
And we haven’t looked back since. Our old air fryer had a paddle that would turn while the appliance was on, which meant that we couldn’t make savories that wouldn’t survive the turning and stirring. And it was only for frying. This one however, can also be used to bake, grill and even make stews and rice. It basically does almost everything you can do at the stove top and oven combined. And over the last few weeks, it has featured almost every day in our iftar meal preparation. We have air baked, air stir-fried and air-fried our way through days of guilt-free iftars. And everything proved to be just as good as the conventional method. We were impressed.
But up until now, while the MultiFry could do everything our oven could, one question kept coming back to our minds. Using it as an alternative to stovetop cooking was excellent. No monitoring the food, no stirring, less oil, it was worth it for that reason alone. But why would we use it for something we can bake in our gas oven, which has more space and already does the job? Is the baking function really worth it?
That question was answered when, the other day we decided to bake cinnamon rolls. Having done all the prep and just as we were about to pop them in the oven, curiosity made us want to try baking a few in the MultiFry. So we decided on an impromptu bake-off. This is what we found:
- Baking in the oven at a temperature of 325ºF and at a medium-high level on the MultiFry, the MutliFry had baked the rolls withing 12 minutes. The oven took about 5-7 minutes longer.
- Because the MultiFry has both top and bottom heating elements working together, the buns had a more even golden colour, while for the gas oven we had to switch on the bottom heating element first, and then the top one after, to ensure it was cooked evenly.
- Most ovens have hot spots (areas where more heat is dispersed), which for us resulted in some rolls being overcooked from the bottom. We didn’t have to worry about that with the MultiFry.
- No pre-heating was required of the MultiFry, which, when baking and worrying about perfect measurements and timings, meant one less thing for us to worry about.
With the main advantage of the oven being that it has a higher capacity, we found that the MultiFry could bake the same amount in batches, taking approximately the same amount of time, and with a better end result. To confirm our findings, we made another batch of baked the rolls the next day, except these were savory Chicken Shawarma Rolls. And they turned out perfect.
But don’t take our word for it. Try it for yourself and see. We recommend you invest in it if any of the following describes you:
- Baking and ovens and temperatures are all terrifying concepts for you. No pre-heating or knowledge of oven temperatures is needed. Most options are preset and all you have to do is choose one and press start.
- You are looking for healthy alternatives to oil-heavy stove-top cooking and frying.
- You are looking for a convection oven. This already carries out all of it’s functions and those of stove-top cooking, so it is a better all-round appliance.
However, there is one aspect that we found not so pleasant. When you are using the top heating element, it has a fan that makes quite a fair bit of noise. Given its many advantages, it didn’t matter much to us. But you should be aware of it nonetheless.
