The Flamin’ Hot Cheetos is the Robert Downey Jr. of the snacking aisle. Or Salman Khan, if you’re Indian/Emirati. The one that’s bad for you but oh-so-good. The unhealthy obsession. The controversial, yet undeniably popular.
It is the life of every road trip and big game, the post-breakup pick me up for those without a sweet tooth. Even the sticky red finger side effects can’t put off the Flamin’ Hot loyalists.
So when the Mexican Flamin’ Hot was announced, with promise of a more flamin’, spicier experience, we were very curious to see the makeover they had done with this chip celebrity.
As you can see, the distinct bright red color is gone, which does make the chips look less threatening. We popped a couple in our mouth, our taste buds in anticipation of that familiar spice kick.
Which is why the relative mildness came as a surprise.
The distinctive flavor was that of smoked paprika, followed by tomatoey garlicness. It was definitely Mexican, but there was nothing about it that was Flamin’.
The verdict? We did enjoy it, after our initial confusion. It is a nice flavor addition to the current line of crunchy Cheetos, the flavors of which leaned towards either cheesiness or spice. Mexican Flamin’ Hot falls in the middle, and is perfect for those who would like a bit more flavor than plain cheese, but are not willing to brave the red-mouthed crunch of the Flamin’ Hot.
That being said, we don’t really expect to see it challenging the popularity of the iconic Flamin’ Hot.
If you have tried the Mexican Flamin’ Hot, we’d love your opinion. Did you enjoy it? If you’re a Flamin’ Hot fanatic, does this compare? Share your thoughts in the comments below 🙂
