We love Arabic Food. And that love extends to the chickpea too, a legume used frequently in Arabic cuisine. So when we discovered the chickpea’s awesome but underrated sibling, the fresh green chickpea, it was gastronomical love at first bite (read more about it here). And we were curious. How would the green chickpea fare as an alternative to the regular one, when turned into hummus?
The result? Absolutely brilliant. Think of the creamy, smooth hummus you are used to, but with this amazing earthy freshness. And if you can get someone to peel those chickpea pods for you, then we suggest you slather this on everything.
Ingredients
- 2 cups green chickpeas peeled
- 2 tbsp tahini paste
- 2 limes
- 1/2 tsp salt adjust to taste
- 1 clove garlic
Servings: cup
Instructions
- Boil the peeled chickpeas for about 5 minutes on medium heat. Remove from heat and let it cool.
- Once cooled, add the chickpeas and all other ingredients to a blender and blend until it's almost smooth (leave it slightly grainy for the signature hummus texture). Adjust salt & other ingredients as preferred.
- Transfer to a bowl and serve.

Wow, that sounds fantastic and I love the fact that you used lime in your hummus instead of the traditional lemon! I’ve never eaten fresh green chickpeas. Do you know where I can buy them in Dubai?
Yeah I prefer using limes, I find the tanginess to be much more subtle. Not sure if the green chickpeas are still in season 🙁 but you can check ethnic pakistani groceries here (in karama & sharjah). Will let you know if I see them around too 🙂
